Poster Girl is a new documentary that is up for an Academy Award this year. Here's a little synopsis...
The story of Robynn Murray, an all-American high-school cheerleader turned “poster girl” for women in combat, distinguished by Army Magazine’s cover shot. Now home from Iraq, her tough-as-nails exterior begins to crack, leaving Robynn struggling with the debilitating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Shot and directed by first-time filmmaker Sara Nesson, POSTER GIRL is an emotionally raw documentary that follows Robynn over the course of two years as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and redemption, using art and poetry to redefine her life.
Nominated for a 2011 Academy Award
I am over the moon that I have been asked to make flowers for Robynn Murray (subject) and Sara Nesson (filmmaker/director) to wear in their corsages for the OSCARS! I was contacted by a dear friend of Ms. Nesson's to help her create flowers out of Combat Paper. Combat Paper is made from the uniforms of returning war veterans as a part of their therapy. Creating Combat Paper was a part of Robynn's PTSD therapy. The director wanted to include it in the corsages that she and Robynn will be wearing to the Oscars. This is a fabulous honor you guys, and I'm thrilled to death! :)
Here are some images of what the Combat Paper looked like when it arrived here... (the paper is actually fabric AND paper, so it is incredibly soft, delicate and gorgeous)
This is what is left over after I hand cut all the petals. I think it is kinda cool and pretty and definitely won't be wasted!
And here are the finished flowers! These will be lovingly incorporated into corsages for the two ladies by their dear friend and fellow veteran.
Ladies, I hope you enjoy your Combat flowers and wear them with all the pride that you deserve to hold in your hearts. Oh, and break a leg!

Thank you so much Angie. Can't wait to get them! The director, Sara Nesson, actually asked me to make something for her to wear at the Oscars that had combat paper in it. Her dress is a dazzlingly sexy champaign color with lots of floral embellishments on the upper half. So instead of a corsage, we decided a floral bracelet (corsage) would work nicely. The film's subject, Robynn Murray, will also wear one.
I began by making some tiny, simple buds from green combat paper and some other leaves and bulbs from other colors. However, I didn't trust myself to make those peonies/wild roses! I'm so glad I found you! Thank you Etsy! I am certain your flowers will complement the pieces perfectly! I'll be sure to send you photos of the finished product! Be sure to watch the Academy Awards show and maybe tune in early to see the Red Carpet arrivals. I'm sure you'll see Sara and Robynn. www.postergirlthemovie.com
What an exciting project and an honor - congratulations!!!
So happy for you! Just yesterday I was reading your thread about your decision to quit your day job to focus on etsy. Your decision could not have been more right!
It shows me that if you work hard, create a quality product and stay open and prepared, it will all find you.
Wow what an honor. What an awesome opportunity. Wow!

Hi Kid,
Congratulations. I am so proud of you and your work.
Love Dad
Oh my gosh that is totally cool. Do you have any pics of them wearing them at the Oscars?
I don't have any pictures yet, but Donna did send me the pic above of the finished corsages before they went to LA.
Angela: Here's a photo of Sara and Robynn with the flowers. They sewed them to their purses instead of wearing them on their arms. : ) http://www.timessquaregossip.com/2011/02/star-studded-83rd-academy-awards.html Just scroll down till you see them about half-way down the page.
Thanks again for your help with this project. I ended up making four corsages total...one for Sara's mom and one for HBO executive Sheila Nevins.
Poster Girl did not win, but we are hopeful the subject of PTSD will get some needed attention. It's been a horribly long war with no end in sight!
Thanks, too, for sending the business cards. I will definitely pass them around.
Donna
Thanks so much for the link Donna! They look fabulous. :) Yes, hopefully the movie nomination will get PTSD much publicity. Best wishes to everyone, and feel free to contact me in the future for anything!
